Easy and plain English resources

Easy English is a simpler form of English used in conjunction with pictures for use by people with limited or low English literacy skills. Plain English is a style of writing that considers the audience and tries to avoid unnecessary words, jargon, technical terms, and long and ambiguous sentences.

Scope provides disability services throughout Victoria to people with physical and multiple disabilities. Scope runs a Communication Resource Centre that provides information and resources for people with little or no speech (complex communication needs) and for people writing Easy English publications. They also have an Easy English Writing Guide.

Vision Australia is Australia ’s leading provider of services for the vision impaired. They provide some resources to assist in writing publications for the vision impaired. They also provide advice and a consultation service.

AskOxford’s guidelines to Plain English. Includes links to specific sections on writing in Plain English.

How to write in Plain English : A straightforward guide by the Plain English Campaign which goes through the fundamental steps of writing in Plain English.

Office of Parliamentary Council provide a number of documents discussing implementing Plain English in a number of areas including legislation.

They also have a list of Plain English links both local and international organisations:

Cleardocs is an organisation which creates automated legal documents in Plain English. 

Is your writing friendly? A British site which gives information about how to make your publications reader friendly from how to write the information to how to set it out on the page.

The Communication Research Institute provide a number of services that will assist you in creating publications which communicate to you audience in the best possible way.

If you are interested in using Readability Tests on your publications this site will give you a good overview of what they are, how they work and what they can and cannot show you about your writing.
