Community Legal Centre Fellowship

2009/10 applications close 7 May 2009

Why was the Fellowship developed? The Community Legal Centre Fellowship was established in 2003 to coincide with 30 years of Community Legal Centres in Victoria .  The Foundation was keen to assist in capacity building in the community legal sector and the Fellowship was developed to meet this need.

The Fellowship is an annual award for Community Legal Centre workers with suitable qualifications and experience.  It provides the Fellow with an opportunity to conduct research into, a policy gap that has been identified in their case work and advocacy.

The Fellowship has a number of specific objectives:

  • to strengthen the capacity of Community Legal Centres to undertake research and program evaluation work in order to enhance law reform activities and public benefit outcomes;

  • to develop collaborative partnerships between universities and other relevant institutions and community legal centres; and

  • to provide financial and in-kind support for the development of community legal research projects.

What is the Fellowship? The Fellowship provides funding to a Community Legal Centre to allow a suitably qualified and experienced Community Legal Centre employee or volunteer to undertake a public benefit project of lasting significance to the sector.  Based on a ‘sabbatical’ model, the successful Fellow will be released from their regular work at their Community Legal Centre to work on their approved project at an agreed host agency.

What is a host agency? A host agency is an organisation which has agreed to provide the candidate with appropriate support to complete the Fellowship.  This support includes workspace and supervision, and may be provided for free or for a fee.  The Foundation can assist in finding a suitable host agency for your project.

Who can apply? See the CLC Fellowship details

What is the value of the Fellowship? The Fellowship amount will be awarded on the basis of a detailed budget submitted with the application.  The Fellowship funds are designed to be used to back-fill the Fellow’s position while they undertake the Fellowship, cover any costs associated with the host agency and other incidental project costs. The maximum amount awarded for the Fellowship is $50,000.00 (exc GST).

How long is the Fellowship? Full-time Fellowships must take place for a period between 3 months and six months.

Do I need to undertake the Fellowship full-time? Generally Fellowships will be undertaken on a full-time basis. Part-time applications will be considered in special circumstances though generally would need to be completed at a minimum commitment of 3 days per week.

What are my obligations as a Community Legal Centre Fellow? See the CLC Fellowship details.

What support do I need from my Community Legal Centre? Your Community Legal Centre must support your application and agree to release you for the period of the Fellowship.  All payments of the Fellowship funds will be made through your Community Legal Centre.

What types of projects are funded with the Community Legal Centre Fellowship? Fellowship projects must benefit the Community Legal Sector and meet the Fellowship project guidelines as outlined in the CLC Fellowship details.
