Law at Work is the theme for Law Week 11-17 May 2009

Coordinated in Victoria by Victoria Law Foundation and the Law Institute of Victoria and supported by the City of Melbourne, Law Week reaches out to members of our community with FREE events, inviting discovery of the rich culture of our law and justice system and celebrating the vital role it plays in our society.

In 2009 Law Week runs from 11-17 May with a range of events to interest everyone from Melbourne to the bush. The theme of Law Week in 2009 is 'Law at Work', focussing on the many roles of people, and workplaces in the law.

Law Week is held in the 3rd week of May each year to promote greater understanding of the law within the community. From exploring the art and architecture of Melbourne's grand legal precinct, to learning about human rights or finding out about local laws affecting you and your neighbours, Law Week has something for everyone!

Law Week is an opportunity for the community to learn about the law and for lawyers to become involved in their communities assisting with understanding of the law.

Law Week aims:

  • To promote greater understanding of the law, justice system and legal profession.
  • To raise community confidence by providing opportunities to learn more about legal issues, justice and protection of individual rights.
  • To stimulate public awareness of the law and its role in society.
  • To include people from diverse backgrounds and organisations in planning and participating in events.
  • To foster partnerships and enable the development of public education programs about the law.
  • To provide legal professionals throughout Victoria with an occasion to participate in leadership and advocacy programs to educate the public about the law.

Who is Law Week for?

The whole community including those who work in the law, can participate in Law Week. A wide range of events are presented across Victoria on a huge variety of topics. There are activities for all age groups and interests.

Law Week is the most significant community outreach activity on the legal calendar. There is something for everyone!
